The feature was about everyday essentials to pack for a holiday, focusing on less obvious items that could prove invaluable.

The top image shows an earlier version, which featured some slightly different items. The last image shows the final illustration in context.

The article discussed how some feel they are being treated more like unpaid staff than valued relatives.

You can read the interview at http://www.pushing-pixels.org/2013/04/16/illustrators-at-work-interview-with-zara-picken.html. I talk about style, unusual feedback and the recent surge in mid-century inspired design amongst other things.

Also, look! New photo of me! It’s a perfectly representative portrait as you can never see my face obscured behind the wall of hair.

I’ve created an illustration entitled “Sleight of Hand”, inspired by Laura Marling’s song “The Beast”. You can find out more about it and vote for it here: http://www.talenthouse.com/creativeinvites/preview/aea34dabf0c73f9e8cbceb3df78b700d/888

The feature was about how companies can help to keep their staff healthy in an age of austerity.

To complement the subject of the article, I used linework and halftone to evoke a 1950s feel.

The marionette one wasn’t included in the end due to space constraints but I still like it! So I thought it was worth posting anyway.

This image was used as a spot illustration to accompany a philosophical feature entitled “Find What You’re Looking For”. It was used on a white background in the final printed version but I’m quite fond of this yellow version.

The article was called “Find What You’re Looking For” and discussed the philosophy of finding happiness in life. This illustration was used as a full page opener for the feature.

The word I chose was "glamour", which has origins in the word "grammar".

The artwork accompanied a feature by four famous writers, including recent Man Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel, who revealed what their lives to date had taught them about men.

They also have a blog, where they thought it would be fun to ask me questions about illustration, mid-century design and hovering cats. I agreed, much merriment ensued and the resulting interview can be seen at http://carbonmade.com/blog/spotlight/meet-zara-picken.

Read and enjoy!
