Shooting day-for-night was an easy choice once I saw these scary-bare branches and forgotten holiday lights still up & glowing in the middle of a March day. It's a great trick that's been used in movies for years, allowing you to create dark, moody & noise-free night shots while still getting your beauty sleep. Here in this setting--a bright, sunny day at about 2:00pm--the contrasts were distinct and the color was sharp, so I knew the effect would work well. After adjusting my white balance (I almost never use AWB), I then underexposed the shot roughly 2 stops (either in-camera or in Lightroom) to allow for the "moonlight" rim lighting to remain illuminated, but the overall tone to be far more subdued. Beyond that, it's simply a matter of tweaking the grayscale until I achieved the desired effect. And I love the resulting image: bright enough to allow for crisp transitions & scary good detail, but still plenty dark enough to convey that sense of creepiness I was after.

Tip: Though I always have a fairly good idea when I'm shooting specifically for B&W (and plan accordingly with settings, light, etc), every now and then I'll begin processing a shot in Lightroom for black & white only to be surprised that it also has strong potential for working well in color (as mentioned in previous tips—you should always shoot in color and RAW format, then convert to monochrome).
