I spent last summer in East Harlem, NY. During that time I produced a series called Product of my Environment. In the first 3 days I was immersed in the culture of this neighborhood and painted a piece on my experience from one block in the neighborhood. On 105th & Lexington, Puerto Ricans are very, very present! You see it, taste it, feel it.

An interpretation of Mal de Ojo meets Dis de Los Muertos, a playful villian is formed. The Ojero plays his game of Ojo, giving tricks instead of treats. This series is a celebration and expression of the playful side of the Mal de Ojo superstition and the playfulness always present in Mexican culture.

There is a sort of sadness that fills the space between an old neighborhood and the new one that is slowly taking over. Fresh franchises and paint splintered with age mix with each other for a while until the handmade local business signs are replaced with inflating price tags. I completed this series to start a conversation on how we can embrace the creations of our past and mix them with the present to create a better, stronger future.
