Russary Length 25.5” (Original not for sale)
The burnt umber stained exterior of the reliquary box is unadorned, not revealing the beauty that awaits the viewer inside.
The inside of the reliquary box is ornate. The door is reminiscent of the Celtic Christian's illuminated texts, such as the “Book of Kells", with Práta Slánaitheoir (Potato Savior) painted in elaborate Celtic lettering.
The reliquary box houses a large “Russary”, hand crafted potato shaped polymer beads containing the proper amount and formation as a Catholic Rosary, nestled in a bed of red velvet.
Just after constructing this assemblage, I read that 2008 was designated the “International Year of the Potato” by the United Nations. The mission of this noble distinction was to highlight the potato’s importance as an inexpensive and nutritional food source in an effort to save lives from poverty and hunger. I began to think about this in the context of my family’s Irish history.
The harsh penal codes enacted in Ireland in 1695 against the Irish Catholics left them unable to practice their religion as well as striping them of their land and livestock, leaving them the potato as the main food source.

Kazuo and Aiko drank the water from the stream in which the dew of the chrysanthemums had fallen; longevity was assured.

Holding hands they made their way back to the bench, the bench that only a few days prior, each sat reading unaware of the other. The sweet smell of flower blossoms filled the air, the grass seemed greener and the birds’ plumage more brilliant, quietly they sat, each secretly wishing this moment would last forever.

Birthdays, the yearly ritual of who looks younger and who looks older, as witnessed by a beloved 1950’s tin wind-up toy- a man dancing with a cane, is the pivotal character of this series. Watching and listening to the family’s history and secrets, he see so much, but reveal nothing, he is the Silent Witness.

The Chop Suey painting to be exact, the light streamed in the window leaving a beautiful yellow-orange glow on the big molding and furniture, and the smell of Chinese food permeated my senses.

I Hear America Screaming -- the classic struggle between the haves and have-nots. Repeated countless times through the ages, and it is happening again, and I am a camera recording as small groups of the oppressed grow, and their rumblings turn in to screams!

The inspiration for this painting was a quote from the book Life with Picasso, written by Françoise Gilot and Carlton Lake, in which Picasso tells Françoise his choicest memories. While painting Guernica, May/June 1937, Picasso is affectionately assisted by Dora Marr, when Marie-Thérèse Walters, Picasso’s live-in girlfriend and mother of his child Maya drops in. Angered by the scene Marie-Thérèse insists that Picasso choose between the women. He stops painting for a moment, and unable to come to a decision says, I like you both; you two fight it out.

Pegeen depicts Marie-Thérèse Walters the victor over Dora Marr in this Picasso like painting,
