This is a painting done for a friend, who is into ballet. I love the look of willow charcoal sketches done by degas and all those great artists. I wanted to capture the feeling of those sketches in a finished piece.

This piece is inspired by vices we all deal with in life. The things that hurt us and people we love the most, that we turn a blind eye to. Becoming comfortable in it and slowly destroying our souls.

Juiu is inspired by the permanence of war of people. I had been studying world war 2 in one of my classes on Eastern Europe and was moved by the stories of war. Hearing the poems written by victims of war, reading stories, watching movies depicting it had really impacted me. One of the things I had thought about was how it must feel for a person who is stripped of their humanity, who no longer is viewed as a human being but as the enemy or more like an animal. How could someone actually shoot a child point blank in the face without blinking? What causes such a loss of conscience? And I thought how would I feel if I lost my house, my family and friends was killed in front of me, I was stripped naked and herded into a small court yard to work and soon die. Loosing everything I thought valuable, even my right of being a human. Where would that leave me? What would that make me? who would I be? what would my thoughts be? Where would hope come from? Would I hate God or think there was no God? Would belief in God help a situation like this? What people have endured and still do is horrendous to even imagine, to place myself in their shoes is difficult to do and makes me think of how fragile life really is and that this world does not evolve around me.
