This illustration is based on the 74th and 75th Hunger Games arenas. The books were obviously inspired by Koushun Takami's Battle Royale, which is a fantastic dystopian novel about a post-war totalitarian Japanese society that randomly selects students for a fight to the death in the Program. I normally prefer "happier" fantasy and science fiction, but reading dystopian books like Battle Royale, Animal Farm, and Nineteen Eighty-Four help me reflect on how society needs to balance the demands of progress with the standards of morality.

The most morbidly delicious part about The Hunger Games trilogy was reading how the Capitol found ways to completely dominate the Districts. The highlight of all this torture, of course, was the arena, where the tributes were tortured physically and the Districts were tortured emotionally. I liked reading the descriptions of the various traps and menaces the tributes had to overcome. I did feel sorry for them, but at the same time I thought that the Capitol's Gamemakers did a pretty good job! Of course I couldn't resist the call to illustrate the arenas.

The maps are probably inaccurate because I didn't have an official map and had to do some guesswork based on the books. However, alternatecoppa's visual guide was a very useful reference: http://alternatecoppa.deviantart.com/art/75th-Hunger-Games-Arena-Visual-Guide-278016534

Imagine Nation (For Sale)

Full preview available here: http://kitkatpecson.com/portfolio/work/imagine-nation/

Here's an ode to childhood -- the stories, books, fairy tales, myths, films, shows, and tall tales I loved as an awkward four-eyed kid. I often stayed up past my bed-time armed with a flashlight (then a cellphone) because I couldn't put down my book. I blame my poor eyesight and wild imagination on JK Rowling, Hans Christian Andersen, Madeleine L'Engle, Edward Eager, and all the other great children's authors.

The imagery created by this poem was too tempting to ignore.

Carnal apple, Woman filled, burning moon,
dark smell of seaweed, crush of mud and light,
what secret knowledge is clasped between your pillars?
What primal night does Man touch with his senses?
Ay, Love is a journey through waters and stars,
through suffocating air, sharp tempests of grain:
Love is a war of lightning,
and two bodies ruined by a single sweetness.
Kiss by kiss I cover your tiny infinity,
your margins, your rivers, your diminutive villages,
and a genital fire, transformed by delight,
slips through the narrow channels of blood
to precipitate a nocturnal carnation,
to be, and be nothing but light in the dark.

Wonderworlds (For Sale)

I have always wanted to make space art and here you have it! I love films like Pocahontas and James Cameron's Avatar because they show the wonder of exploring new worlds. In this case, I have tried creating new planets and imagining what they good be like. I firmly believe that we aren't alone in the universe and it excites me to think that one day we could be boarding ships to see entirely new and wild biospheres that teem with strange plants and exotic animals. We could be wading in the trail of comets, basking in the shadow of moon-sized trees, sipping liquid rubies and sapphires, hiking through inverted mountains, and who knows what else! I'm an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy so I think, some lightyears away, there may be actual Gallifreys, Arrikis, and Pandoras.

Orchid Orgasmic (For Sale)

People tend to generalize nature as passive, calm, and zen. This is an attempt to portray flowers in a more charged setting and to explore sensuality. Orchids are bursts of complex formations and varied color schemes nestled on simple green leaves and stalks. They are difficult to care for but have always captured the imagination -- they currently enjoy status as symbols of sexuality and virility. Interestingly, orchids have a bizarre sex life -- either luring honeybees into pollination or engaging in self-reproduction. A study reads, "Here we describe a new type of self-pollination mechanism in the tree-living orchid Holcoglossum amesianum, in which the bisexual flower turns its anther against gravity through 360° in order to insert pollen into its own stigma cavity — without the aid of any pollinating agent or medium."

Ode to Childhood (For Sale)

When you're a kid, folded pieces of paper become castles, puddles become oceans, and toys become fierce warriors or mystical creatures. I wanted to capture that magical feeling with this carousel come to life. Here we have an origami balloon, a bubbling seahorse, bubbles and balloons, and children who were allowed to color their hair.

Even though I'm all grown up now, I still want to keep my inner child alive. It's important to maintain a little magic because otherwise life would be very dull and there would be no joy in art or design. I believe that if you can maintain the open-eyed wonder of a child, you can do anything! Children have this amazing stubbornness and persistence that allows them to believe that if they wish hard enough, they can make something happen. That's something adults can learn from.

"Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit." - e e cummings
