The artworks were intended to appeal to the youth segment, and thus disport an interplay between style and pop-culture. The final designs were then be featured on a series of products, ranging from speakers to headphones. This illustration series began as an interpretation of the 5 dynasties; Liang, Tang, Jin, Han and Zhou. The dynasties are represented by 5 decorative combs, 1 adorning each ruler.

After combining the sovereign birds into a single image, I wondered what they would look like when treated individually; so, I experimented with doily patterns to create a border for each comb with the intention that the lace's delicate quality would both compliment and contrast the stringent nature of these feathery rulers.

Introducing the fourth commanding officer, Emperor Han. This intimidating monarch lead a short-lived regime. However, they were able to assimilate practically every territory that crossed their path, seemingly with nothing more than a steely gaze.

This particular comb represents Jin, a persistent dictator who despite his ambition, lacked the stability and focus of his predecessor, Tang. This often caused Jin to fall victim to chaos.

Emperor Liang, the first ruling member of the royal sovereign birds. Often, untrustworthy and traitorous, Liang's methods were considered an embarrassment to the dynasty. However, some might argue that this ruler's influence gave song to the 'Golden Age'.

Emperor Zhou is the youngest and last ruling member of the 5 sovereign birds. Though, dutiful and noble, his reign was short-lived. Along with his precursors, Zhou was able to give rise to the Song Dynasty - their final movement.

By pairing this particular plant with rabbits, I wanted to playfully compare the reproductive nature of both species and celebrate the continuity of life.
