Character Building

A good story, in any medium, is only as interesting as the characters in it. How do you invent a fictional being with which the whole world can identify? If we knew the answer we'd be millionaires, but there are plenty of people out there trying hard to come up with the next Mickey Mouse or Homer Simpson. We talk to some of them about the difficulties and satisfactions of this challenge and ask them what advice they would give to someone starting out on the character-building path.

Shaping Their Own Patterns

Patterns are easy, right? Just come up with a nice little design, then copy-and-paste it ad infinitum. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. We decided to reduce the parameters even further – and asked seven creatives who utilise mainly shapes to achieve their desired effect, how the tight discipline involved both constrains and liberates them. It is a lot more complicated than you might think – but the results can be deeply satisfying.

Artist on the Front Line

A line is so much more than just the distance between two dots. It is the fundamental building-block that every artist employs – even if, like Jackson Pollock, they are simply dribbling paint onto a horizontal canvas. It is a signifier of innate talent: the critics speak of "bold" lines and "subtle" lines. One would be hard-pressed to think of any work of art that did not involve lines – even Malevich's notorious 1915 "Black Square" wouldn't have worked without an outline to define it.

IdN Video v18n5: 8-Bit
Vintage games nostalgics

The software technology known as 8 Bit was responsible for the rapid spread and unprecedented popularity of video games in the '70s and '80s. Primitive though they were, those games grabbed the imagination of an entire generation. And now that many of them have grown up to become motion designers, they are summoning up their childhood memories to incorporate aspects of them into their latest digital creations, be they music videos, smartphone games or short movies, thus giving a 30-year-old sub-culture a whole new lease of life.

Colour Toning

It is not nostalgia-design, though some of it has a decidedly old-fashioned feel to it, and it is not minimalist design as such, except when it comes to the use of colour. It is what has become known as mono-graphics — where because of budgetary restraints or a self-imposed restriction, the design is printed in only one or two colours. Mono-graphics doesn't have to mean monotonous. Less colour often makes for more context. We got 9 experts in this issue to demonstrate the incredible visual strength that can be created by using just one or two hues.

How do they absorb all the material they need to understand before deciding how to demonstrate it? And to what extent does the type of data to be illustrated affect the visual outcome? We have selected more than 30 brilliant infographic motion works, movies and animations, to show you how lively and aesthetically pleasing such instructional efforts can be.

10 DESIGNERS / 10 CURATORS

We have asked 10 top-of-the-class creatives to answer a couple of questions — how do they view today's design scene, and what advice would they offer newcomers to it? Not only that, but our Top 10 have been generous enough to pick out 10 peers whose work they believe deserves greater prominence for your enjoyment. A feast of inspiration, then, for everybody in the art and design business.

Let's Go Green

One simple motto - 'Buy and use only what you really need and then get rid of it properly when you have finished with it' - could make a huge difference in helping to reduce the mountain of waste that is threatening to destroy our eco-system. As those responsible, in one way or another, for most of the products we purchase, designers bear a heavy responsibility to make sure that our shopping is environmentally friendly. But many are worried about the supposed higher costs, the potential loss of clients and the restrictions on creativity that this might involve.

Red is warm, blue is cool, green is fresh and natural. We use colour to strengthen our perception of almost everything in the world. And ever since the invention of Three-Strip Technicolour in the 1940s, film-makers have employed colour to heighten the emotions they wish to convey. In this special “Colour Collection”, we present the work of 18 internationally known short-film specialists – all of whom regard colour as a crucial element of their creativity.

Brand Everything

Show me some ID, please
Human beings are born with a unique identity – carried in our DNA or via our fingerprints. And when that officer of the law asks you to show him some ID, you simply flash your ID card, passport or driving licence. Things are not that simple for companies and institutions, who have to have one invented for them. Once upon a time, a simple, eye-catching logo did the trick. Now it has all become very much more complicated, with the bigger firms needing a complete “identity system”.

Our 15 featured designers in this article have all specialised in creating such systems, big and small, and here they discuss the challenges involved, the pleasures and pitfalls of trying to manufacture a winning personality for a product or brand.
