The original inspiration came from a friend who had written a occult book (part fiction, part biography) about the art of Necromancy (a form of magic involving communication with the deceased....either by summoning their spirit as an apparition or raising them bodily for the purpose of divination, imparting the means to foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge).
He had sent me a copy of the manuscript to read over and asked me if I was interested in doing artwork and illustrations for the book & the cover work to be published. After reading the manuscript I compiled the following piece for the cover work.
Using latex and a prosthetic rib cage, I did the gore FX makeup myself. I then took 5 self portraits of myself with the camera on a tripod, over-imposed them and added a photograph I took of a deer skull. The background consists of a photograph of a church cathedral I took, turned upside down...... a scan of an old original lithograph of "Death" that I have from Germany, but do not know the original artist. The monks are also a scan of an original picture of some statues of monks that someone in my family took.... although I do not know where these statues are located.
Incorporation of some classical occult symbols (protective circles and portals for looking into the next realm) were also used in the piece. This will eventually also be part of a Tarot Deck I have been working on.

The Necromancer (For Sale)

<img src="http://a1.s6img.com/cdn/0010/p/2711291_11432305_l.jpg"/>"The Necromancer" was a digital photography / FX Gore make-up project I did back in 2007. The image was taken indoors and the background/environmental elements were of course compiled and Photo-Shopped in later. Nothing about the initial photograph or costume were altered except the color contrast and some shadows/shading effects. This was a difficult shot to capture when you are working alone covered in stage blood!

The "The Shedding Of Darkness" reflects the spiritual transition through the course of deep winter....the introspection, self awareness, discipline & work we must all do within ourselves to shed the old.... to make room for the new rebirth we all have in spring.

The Shedding Of Darkness (For Sale)

<img src="http://a1.s6img.com/cdn/0010/p/2682383_12534619_l.jpg"/>This is a self-shot portrait using a digital camera on a tripod and then setting a timer.
