It would take years for it to adapt to that kind of climate and environment, and there are far too many native desert creatures that would prey upon it. The background of this watercolor and ink painting is Monument Valley, Utah, and is adapted from a photograph seen in my book, "Open Range: From Monument Valley to the Mojave Desert." "Open Range: From Monument Valley to the Mojave Desert" by Charlie Thomason (self-published through Blurb.com)
If you look really close you can see a skull hidden in the rocks.

The Melting Doge (For Sale)

Water-mixable oils on canvas paper. 12″ x 16″. I’ve always been fascinated by the intense realness of Bellini’s Portrait of Leonardo Loredan (Doge of the Republic of Venice in the early 16th century), as well as the history of Venice in general. Since the entire culture of the Republic was based on water, I decided to give the old Doge a more fluid makeover. The dripping, or “melting” effect on Loredan and the St. Mark’s Lion reflect the impermanence of Venice. The design in the background is a simplification of the Grand Canal, which gives the city its color and life. Water-mixable oil paint on canvas, 53" x 30", 2007. Corman was responsible for adapting many of Poe's works into feature-length films. Oftentimes, Corman would only need a couple weeks to shoot these amazing films and a couple months total to complete an entire production. The content and style of this painting is an homage to Corman's approach to Poe's work, which could be defined as a mixture of haphazard improvisation, highly original innovation, and genius creativity. This painting was one of the last works I completed as an undergrad at the University of Kentucky.

Octoskull is a new character I've been experimenting with in my art. He is the amalgamation of a vampiric skull and an octopus, and will definitely be making more appearances in my art.

Quanah Parker, Last Chief of the Comanches (For Sale)

India ink with dip pen on paper, 8" x 11", 2012

Quanah Parker was the last chief of the Comanche Indians and the last leader of the Quahadi band who were one of the last groups of Native Americans to surrender (in 1875). Quanah was the son of a Comanche man and a European woman. His life story is told in the book "Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History" by S. C. Gwynne.

French Quarter Motorcycle Guitarist (For Sale)

Oil on canvas paper. 12″ x 16″. 2011.

This painting originated as two separate photographs I took in the French Quarter district of New Orleans, LA while on a trip there in March 2010. In one photograph, there was this very unusual-looking street guitarist, with a massive pair of bull horns strapped to the front of his motorcycle. He was parked right in the street, playing some blues jams on a beat-up old acoustic-electric guitar, looking like a character you might find in a Tom Waits song. In another photo, there was this beautiful, quintessential French Quarter building with an arcade of green doors and hard, late-afternoon sunlight. The two photographs were each going to be their own, separate paintings, but were eventually compounded into one image. I attempted to give the painting a purposefully-unfinished look, which represents the man’s mysterious and enigmatic nature. The style, coloring, and lighting of the image were inspired by the work of Edward Hopper.

Vincent Price is my favorite actor of all-time. Personally, I feel his best work was 1971's "The Abominable Dr. Phibes," which I wrote about here: http://recycledfilm.net/the-abominable-dr-phibes/ .. This particular piece, however, is modeled primarily after the mansion in Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands," which was Price's last performance. He died less than a week before Halloween in 1993.

Open Range (For Sale)

This was taken around midnight just outside the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, in an area called Monument Pass. This particular formation is referred to as the “Saddleback Mesa,” not to be confused with the Saddleback Butte near Joshua Tree National Park in California.
