I wanted to balance coarse geometric shapes and simple forms of construction with subtle curves and refined finishes.

This stool is 30" tall. The bottom of the seat is constructed from hot-rolled, mild steel. It was painted black and scuffed to highlight coarse grind marks and mill scale. The top of the seat is polished stainless steel. The stool is titled S01.

It separated us from animals. It carried us to a new level of existence and elevated us to the top of the food chain. When man used his hands to master tooling and crafting he became a whole new being. Ever since, people have handed down ideas and methods of creation along to the following generations. I love to see skilled, hand-crafted work. I have a lot of respect for people who learn to master techniques in various trades and artforms. As I grow as an artist, I keep my eyes focused on mastering my execution of ideas; balancing the big picture and the small details.

Always something new to learn. As I move forward in life and in my artistic career I look forward to all the new things that await me in the future.

The things we try to acquire and choose to keep say something about each one of us. As much as I enjoy drawing things I like, I enjoy opening up to things around me. My friend Joe recently lent me a set of his clippers so I could draw them. I wouldn’t call this a portrait of him but the drawing does suit him.

I like working on these small pieces. The detail demands a lot of attention and it makes my mind sink into the work. I constantly remember my junior high art teacher, Mr. Randolph, who always told me, “Draw what you see, not what you think you see.”

Some projects just somehow piece themselves together. Here’s a new drawing.

I began creating a body of work, mainly consisting of acrylic paintings. About two years ago, I felt it was time to move onto something greater. I was content with my former body of work. Then I faced a dilemma. I honestly didn't know where to go with my creative work. I felt that I had matured and that I needed to move on to new conceptions. I was at a standstill with my indecisive self. I had so much energy and was ready to begin working, but I had nowhere to direct my energy. I then stopped trying to strategize and I began to do the simple things I like doing. A sketch here and there led me to draw my shoes. I then drew other things around my workspace. I still don't know where I am heading, but I feel happy with where this creative process is taking me.

I don’t know if I can ever be content with who I am as an artist. I refuse to compare my self to my peers. I want to compare myself to my favorite artists and designers. I want to achieve more than those whom I admire. I want to be more than any one expects.

I grew up with all a kid could want. Never missed a meal thanks to my parents' hard work. I wasn't always able to get everything I wanted though. I didn't know much about sneakers but I remember being in elementary when I first saw these shoes. I thought they were the coolest thing. I never watched basketball, or any sport for that matter, so I didn't know anything about Jordans or the Bulls. But something drew me to these shoes. A couple years ago, I spotted these and I had to have them.

I love how ideas and images can be transferred from my mind, through my hand, onto a piece of Bristol paper or a sketchbook. I have memories of getting lost in drawing as far back as the age of 8! It still thrills me. I have a small workspace but I hope to start bigger projects again soon.

The artist carried his journal with him to jot thoughts down when he had free time. He told me about how he wrote music and poetry on his train and bus rides around the city. My friend said that his favorite song of all time was written while this artist was sitting on a crowded bus. My friend pointed out that it was fascinating to know that this artist was carrying his journal everywhere. If he was too lazy, uncomfortable or embarrassed to write on that bus, my friend’s song may have never been written.

I have carried my sketchbook with me since I was a senior in high school, often remembering my friend’s story about his favorite artist. Since then, I have filled about 10 books with spontaneous thoughts, chicken scratches, emotional journal entries and drawing after drawing.

Drawing can be the beginning of a long journey to a completed, finished work. This series of shoe drawings captivates my enthusiasm for sneaker in simple, small scale sketches. I drew shoes that I like, and some that I’m proud to own. The drawings capture the simplicity in sneakers. I compare their casual beauty to simple pencil lines and texture.

I had forgotten how fun drawing can be. The exhibit will display a blend of all the media I enjoy working with. It will include paintings, drawings, custom sneakers, two sculptures and a few furniture pieces.

I love to pick up new shoes, hats and t-shirts! I've been lucky to work with a local streetwear shop in Tucson, AZ. They sell select brands and their own line of t-shirts. The brand keeps things pretty simple, and the work I did seemed to suit them well. I drew up the script lettering and wildcat character.
