With Memorial Day and Independence Day coming soon in the U.S., the red, white and blue was used in a unique way, on and around the flowers, the shape of the flowers and the ground, a skin print which the flowers lie upon. With ambre affects being so popular it made sense to not only add pattern within the flowers but a soft blending of several colors all within the feel of red, white and blue.

Inspired from photos the artist took in Hawaii, this pattern started as a pure water color piece of art. Variegated colors within the leaves and an almost Batik type texture in the ground using gouache gave it a life like feel. Softening with filters updated the art for beautiful contemporary products.

The enjoyment of mixing my painting with my photos and playing the two together into a new mix is exciting. Hand painted rice papers torn in strips and shapes and laid in layers by hand, were the start of this piece of art. If you look closely you can see the slight changes in paper color, texture and markings. Once on the computer, the art was given an ikat edging and additional stripings and circles, all overlapping to create a fun Pop Art look.

This design came from an inspiration of a piece of art my Mom created in the 1950s. She and my Dad lived in Germany, and had very little money just out of school. So Mom would take string and pin it down onto scrap fabric, add other scrap fabric for the blocks of color and keep changing it when they needed new art. My piece Donna's Autumn Woodcut was inspired from her work in woodcuts, and she asked for a piece that would coordinate with it. Using the same colors, I came up with an updated version of her 1950s string piece. When I looked at her lines, they reminded me of dancing people with large fancy hats on, hence the title.

This photo, taken around 1915, is of my paternal grandma's first farm as they came to America and settled in the Upper UP (Michigan). I'm very proud of my great grandfather and how he came to our great country, and made a life for his family. I restored the photo, then decided to work on it as a piece of art. The Finns are a proud people, and love to take a hot sauna and get around on X-Country skis. It's in my blood, their spirit as well, which they call Sisu.

The artist used the paisley influence in fashion to hand paint the flow and movement of paisley designs using other motifs. The look evolved into more of an Asian or Polynesian mix of fans, with the addition of leaf shapes. The hand painting lends itself to each shape being a bit unique from the others. This fits with the feel of one being in a place where perfection is not important, relaxation and contentment are the norm. Colors are changing into unexpected mixes for new interest. The red and light aqua mix is definitely refreshing.
