It would be interesting if society6 had such a solution available since it is cheap and long-lasting.

The race was marked by the tragic death of talented brit racing driver Peter Collins in his Ferrari. However, the image that became famous was of his team-mate Wolfgang Von-Trips tackling the Karussell in his Dino 246 pictured. That exact moment inspired this t-shirt exclusively illustrated by graphic artist Susana Real for MotorBest.

Von-Trips descended from a noble family, he himself being a Count. He was a true gentleman driver that became famous by his fearless ten-tenths style that often resulted in spectacular crashes earning him the nickname “Von-Crash”

Unfortunately, one of those crashes would put an end to his life at the 1961 Italian Grand Prix.

Bullitt chase (For Sale)

Art print inspired by the car chase from the film "Bullitt".

Grand Style (For Sale)

Few moving objects have a shape as easily recognizable and adorable as the Vespa. Part of the magic of Piaggio’s creation is related to our imagination. This is one of very few vehicles in which what it is is far less important than what it means.

No one has ever put it better than Umberto Eco when he wrote: Thus the Vespa came to be linked in my eyes with transgression, sin, and even temptation- not the temptation to possess the object, but the subtle suggestion of faraway places where the Vespa is the only means of transport. And it entered in my imagination not as an object of desire, but as a symbol of an unfulfilled desire.

Those are the reasons for which the Vespa is an humble yet enviable transport.

Stratos (For Sale)

Illustration featuring Lancia Stratos

Magnificent Giulia (For Sale)

The spell casted by the looks of the early 105 series Alfas can only be paired by some very special Italian supercars like, for instance, a Miura or a Daytona. The perfect proportions and attention to detail in Giugiaro’s design turned the little Alfa into an Italian icon, just like the coliseum.

The handling and performance were also special but to cope with competition from Lotus and BMW in the touring car championships, Alfa came up with the GTA, a lightweight version of Giulia Sprint GT. The beautiful “step front” body was now partly made from light alloy and was campaigned with tremendous success winning three European Touring Car titles.

Hatch Dance (For Sale)

During the 60’s and 70’s the economical and social environment paved the ground for the progress of the motoring industry. Strong economies meant that there was a growing market for niche cars varying from flashy GTs to radical sports cars. Low-volume car makers became countless.

In comparison, the 80’s were like a desert crossing, especially for the performance car market. A very different economy strongly affected by the ever-rising oil prices, forced the automotive industry to adapt quickly. The chrome work gave way to vinyl. Long bonnets gave way to large boots.

The survival of the industry was then relying on mass production models and those had to be as rational and practical as possible. The 80’s didn’t promise much excitement in terms of performance cars, yet the spirited drivers were around, waiting for products that raced their pulse.

After the previous success of some sporty utilitarian cars such as the Mini Cooper S or the Alfasud Ti, the answer found by the car manufacturers was not a surprise. Surprising, however, was the level of efficiency and fun to be had from this sort of “econobox” derived cars.

Hatchbacks became the shape of the performance car, hence creating the term “hot hatch”, a class of which the VW Golf GTI immediately became an icon. Ford soon came up with an answer based on the MK3 Escort.

The XR3 had two tough missions: to beat the Golf and to try to fill the gap left by the legendary RWD Escort generations. It accomplished none of them, but when you look at it 30 years on, it has the sort of 80’s retro coolness that makes you smile. Big decals, teledial wheels, big fog lights, all the 80’s clichés were there.

To celebrate this handsome underdog, we brought you this beautiful artwork featuring the Escort XR3 and its main rival, the Golf GTI.

Invincible (For Sale)

Jochen Rindt’s name was associated with tragedy since his early years when he lost both of his parents during a bombing raid in WW2. Raised by his grandparents in Austria, Jochen was a mentally strong boy but quite wild in spirit.

Passionate with speed and competition, he started collecting scars and bruises in ski races, later moving to mopeds and motocross. In all those sports Rindt showed a tendency to either win or crash spectacularly.

In his second ever F2 race at Crystal Palace, Rindt managed to beat British hero Graham Hill in a spectacular manner. His driving style and winning ambition were well pictured by the contemporary descriptions of the event: “His car was sideways throughout the race. It went around the corners at unbelievable angles and always looked as if it was about to go off the road.”

It’s no surprise that Jochen’s F1 hero was Wolfgang Von Trips. Both seemed to value victory more than their own body integrity and the consequences were, as expected, quite similar.

In 1970 Rindt arrived to the Italian Grand Prix counting already five race wins, four of them with the Lotus 72. However, in this particular race, the new car couldn’t keep up with Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni Ferraris in the faster sections. To mend that, Chapman and Rindt decided it would be better to run the car without wings and with a longer gear ratio, which allowed it to reach 330kph.

During the final qualifying session and under hard braking, the Lotus suffered a brake failure that led the car to swerve left hitting a post head on, with the well known consequences.

Despite being killed four races before the end of the season, Rindt could still not be beaten by his rivals in the championship. This makes of him the only posthumous race champion, invincible in life or death.

This artwork was inspired by the last of Rindt’s victories with the beautiful Lotus 49 complete with the famous Gold Leaf livery. It happened at the 1970 Monaco Grand Prix.

Fiat 128 (For Sale)

The 128 might not be the cutest or the most desirable of the small Fiat clan, yet it was probably one of the most significant in the evolution of the utilitarian car.

Unlike the 500, 600 or 850, this was a car ahead of its time, despite the then traditional boxy stile. It featured a front transversely mounted engine, front wheel drive, overhead camshaft, independent suspension all-round and servo-assisted disc brakes.

These features gave the little Fiat comfort, composure and a nice handling that invited the driver to exploit the lively engine. Therefore it wasn’t a surprise to see it in action at the European Touring Car Championship, at endurance races, rallies and hill climbs.

This colorful illustration by graphic artist Susana Real features a beautiful 128 Rally in a racy stile, with enlarged wheel arches and fog lights.

Prinz (For Sale)

Illustration featuring the NSU Prinz TT-S

GS (For Sale)

Illustration featuring Citroën GS classic car.
