I've been a fan of all Anderson’s films and bad dads, especially Royal and his Tenenbaum clan. Additionally, the Royal Tenenbaums film has often provided some good audio-visual background stimuli in the studio. The character of Margot is a lone “free bird” shrouded in secrecy and mystery and I wanted to connect her to the Baumer's falcon, Malachai. I'm not sure if Anderson’s intent was for Malachai to represent Margot, Baumer, Royal, or all the children as they returned to their nest, but this was the connection that I enjoyed and indulged.

Obviously I chose to go the Coen route with my "Quartet of Screaming Goodmans" here. Goodman's jailbreak scene from Raising Arizona is one of my all time movie favorites and my introduction to the Coen experience. It's about 5 minutes of constant yelling as he births himself from the mud, after which he pulls out his partner upside down by his foot with one arm. Shown here are all of Goodman's appearances in the Coen Brothers' films (so far) in their finest yelling moments: Gale Snoats from Raising Arizona; Charlie Meadows or Madman Karl Mundt from Barton Fink; Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski; and Big Dan Teague from O Brother, Where Art Thou. Goodman also appeared in another amazing Coen film, The Hudsucker Proxy, in voiceover form as the Newsreel Announcer. He is credited as the alias Karl Mundt, ha!

To be honest, I've always been a bit apprehensive towards themed or project shows and usually tend to shy away. Perhaps it's because it can feel like an assignment, or perhaps it's that I'm not that interested in introducing pop culture into my work. Maybe it's that the Coen Brothers have a legion of fans and I tend to feel uncomfortable when I do a piece that may have mass appeal as my audience usually have somewhat niche interests. Maybe it's that I can never completely make the work my own as I'm referencing someone else's art. in this case, the filmmakers themselves, cinematographers, set designers, lighting directors, music score creators and the whole crew that encompasses the entire Coen aesthetic and feel.

However, I AM a huge fan of their films, so why the hell not. It's also nice to break up the plight of my current work for a bit and do something that's pure fun and a tribute to something I love and respect.

Wow, how's that for a ramble? Fuck it dude, let's go bowling.

I donated this piece to Local Hearts for Healthy Hearts in April, 2011 which exhibited at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara and benefitted The American Heart Association. Original is 16" x 16" x 1.5" acrylic and stain on birch panel.

Similar to the New York and Toronto S.A.T. ( http://society6.com/Peirce/Toronto-Street-Advertising-Takeover ), but quite different in content:

MaSAT (Madrid Street Advertising Takeover) is the second international street ad takeover project, and the third in a series of civil disobedience projects intent on changing our expectations of public behavior in our shared environments. For this SAT project we targeted Cemusa bus shelters in 4 heavily populated locations around Madrid. This time, at the request of our Madrid based collaborators, participants were asked to submit only text based works. This fantastic idea allowed us to open up the submission request process to a wide range of individuals including sociologist, teachers, lawyers, gallery owners and anyone with a concern for the curation and participation in public space. Each of the 106 individuals were asked to submit one sentiment they wished to see exhibited on the streets. The result is a variety of unique visions of public dialogue and a glimpse at the possibilities available when we open up our public environment in a truly public way.

The Public Ad Campaign website hosts all artists' contributions as well as a map to each location: http://www.publicadcampaign.com/masat/

Cream of Vegetable (For Sale)

<img src="http://a1.s6img.com/cdn/box_001/post_11/247406_4997263_l.jpg"/>The Warholian curated an exhibit called Warhol Reimagined: The NewFactory and asked us to individually reinterpret Warhol's soup cans. Artists were assigned corresponding flavors and they were displayed in the same layout as the MoMa.

For my can 'o Campbell's I thought of this can discarded somewhere to start it's very long break-down process inhabited by those things which break down matter. Coincidentally, there's the blatant pun with a can full of worms and that's just what Andy did with his work, open up a can of worms as he unleashed an entire new level of pop art into the world. Warhol was definitely a "hit you over the head" kind of artist with his visuals, so I wanted to pay homage to that while keeping within my realm of curiosity and painting style.

Maybe it was growing up in Reno, but I can't think of a littered can without bullet holes. As a couple more cross-threads, Andy Warhol was shot twice (not fatally) and Dennis Hopper, supposedly in a drug and booze infused night had shot his Mao Zedong painting by Warhol a couple times. Hopper's estate recently sold the painting which Warhol described as a "collaboration" for $302,500. Daaaamn.

A year and a half in the making and four levels below the city lives 100 artists' work. The finished, but never used, hidden train station exists as an art time capsule with just the quiet roars of the nearby trains to keep it company.

It was a zombie-based show with art about the walking dead, brains, death, gore, blood, maggots, worms, flies, rotting, apocalypse, etc, etc and Ziggy Stardust provided the perfect muse as the "dead" alter-ego of my favorite musician.

Based on David Bowie's iconic "Alladin Sane" album cover photographed by Brian Duffy.

Take a venture through the website complete with all artists' work and a map to each location: http://www.publicadcampaign.com/tosat/

I had the pleasure of meeting Jordan during another massive project he's still involved with in NYC and was inspired by his dedication to see large-scale subversive public art projects through along with a network of volunteers and guerilla support. Of course I was more than happy to contribute to questioning the use of our public spaces by the powers that be.
