LAW OF ATTRACTION 2011 6.5”w X 11.5”h Graphite & ink on Arches paper This image formed from a doodle, at which time I was intrigued by the societal phenomenon of the book ‘The Secret’. Virtually everyone was going on about the idea of the Law of Attraction, how our internal dialogue/self-programming is what largely determines our reality, and that by focusing on a perceived desired outcome (almost always a financial/material gain) one could control reality and the conditions of one’s life. Is it really that simple? Do we, in fact, have within us the power to control the conditions of our lives merely with our thoughts?

SECRETS OF OSIRIS II 2011 5”w X 8”h Graphite, watercolour & ink on Arches paper A piece exploring the intertwined and dependent relationship between life and death and the role consciousness plays across both states. What is consciousness and where in the body is its seat? Consciousness is at once a part of the mind, the heart and the bodies ~ and yet, still something more. It moves always, whether we are awake or asleep. It is sometimes inside us and sometimes outside ~ it spends time with us, as us, and then moves on, but we are always connected to it. The consciousness seems to have its own identity, while at the same time having a relationship with the individual. Is it the same in death as in life? Is consciousness, as its own identity, what calls us to bodies, shapes us and sets our destinies? Consciousness would seem to be eternal and immortal, unlimited, unchanging ~ a singularity that somehow runs through everyone and everything. We do not know what consciousness is, but it knows what we are.

are we bound by ourselves or others? SECRETS OF OSIRIS I 2011 6”w X 8”h Graphite, watercolour & ink on Arches paper The idea of mummies and mummification is fascinating to me. Especially the fact that all of the critical organs would be removed & kept intact, preserved in their own special jars. All except the brain, which was first rather mashed up, pulled out through the nasal cavity and then thrown away. There are no surviving explanations as to why the brain was treated in such a negligible manner, so one can only speculate on the reasons the ancients may have had for discarding a part that, to us, is such a vitally important organ; great scientific effort is spent today attempting to preserve our brains. I also find the ideas of the bandages, wrappings, ointments, spells, jars and offerings all so very curious. Were these merely superstitious people, as science would have us believe? Or did they, in fact, have knowledge of the afterlife that we lack? We may never know, but it is fun to wonder.
