And God Created Woman - Et Dieu créa la femme Who more than Brigitte Bardot personified the ultimate in French beauty and style during the latter part of the 20th century? Her natural exquisiteness made her an easy subject to illustrate and this composition came together in a very natural, intuitive manner as I made use of feminine vintage lettering, rosy illustrated peonies and a black ribbon, appropriately labeled with the Vadim film that made her famous (And God Created Woman) to tie it all together. The backdrop is, of course, gingham – part of Bardot’s iconic image. And last, but not least, the two ‘B’s recall the Serge Gainsbourg song, the Initials BB, that he wrote for Bardot and that was the inspiration for this composition.

This illustration started with the following question: what if Miss Dior were more bookish, à la Nancy Drew? Then ensued an entire adventure filled with questions. What would she wear? What would be the subtle changes in her style, her body language, her manner? The questions gave way to different treatments, three of which are available for purchase — black and white ink, 2-color, and full color. The layout mirrors that of a vintage mystery novel, with Nancy carrying a girlie twist on the proverbial magnifying glass.
