We are looking for illustrators, artists and designers to take part.

The brief is to illustrate a quote, motto, lyric or saying that gets you through the dark and difficult times or makes you laugh when you most need cheering up.

It can be philosophical and
profound, silly and cheeky, lighthearted and poetic or even rather dark.

We will be collecting the images on tumblr (http://walkcheerfully.tumblr.com/), and also plan to put together a printed zine at the end of the project.

We all know people who are struggling at the moment, and perhaps sharing the words that help us can help others too, even if only in a small way.

Specifications:

Dimensions: 210mm x 297mm,
Resolution: 300dpi,
Portrait or landscape,
All work must be in colour.

Somewhere in the image you must clearly include your quote/motto/saying in hand-rendered or typed text.

E-mail entries as a jpeg to: walkcheerfullyzine@gmail.com

When submitting your illustration, please also include details of any links to your online portfolio so we can help to share your work with the world.

I've really got into working with mechanical pencils lately too - they're so precise, and the range of marks and tones they're able to create is surprisingly broad, especially if you work back into the drawing with an eraser. I find its so nice to cover pencil drawings in a thin layer of very watery watercolour wash too (although I recommend using heavier paper than I did for this piece...I'm not always that precious when experimenting - sometimes cheaper materials make it much easier to just play). Gesso is another of my favourite mediums to work with (beyond its main purpose as a primer)- it's smooth and buttery and creates a bit of texture when you need it. It tends to reflect a lot of light when scanned too. I tend to scan my illustrations in to Photoshop just to adjust the levels and play about with the hue/saturation.

"The piano has been drinking, not me" - Tom Waits (For Sale)

Analog Zine

Fly on the Wall (For Sale)

originally an illustration for Unfold Amsterdam, for an article on International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Within illustration there is a fine tradition of social commentary, satire and reflection, and I'd like to bring together illustrators working in this way.

This is partly in response to a recent article in Creative Review "where is the content? where is the comment?" which takes the view that illustration has become an insular, self-indulgent craft, lacking engagement with political issues.

The brief:

Create an illustration dealing with a contemporary issue which you feel strongly about.

Layout:

A4 dimensions, 300dpi

landscape or portrait (bearing in mind it will fold in centre to form an A5 booklet)

Colour or black and white (original colour pages will be uploaded to a blog while a paper copy will use black and white photocopies of these images, so bear in mind that your image/text will need to work well tonally)

Aside from that, it is completely open, and you can use whatever media/techniques you like.

I'd like to involve as many talented illustrators as possible - the more the merrier!

The final collected works will be displayed on a Sidle Zine blog with links to each contributor's web-site or blog, and a final printed edition of Sidle will be sent to Salford Zine Library in Greater Manchester, UK. (http://salfordzinelibrary.blogspot.co.uk/)

E-mail your contributions (or any questions or suggestions you might have) to:

sidlezine@hotmail.co.uk
