The season was early and the snow was still light but we found powder where we could and on the edge of the Anthracites we strapped in at 12,500ft. The sun was almost gone but we knew our decent would be quick and our trail out was straight forward and easy to find once we turned on our headlamps. Halfway down the snow softened and we were completely alone in the cold quiet we floated

After a day in the woods we emerged on the eastern side of Mt. Hood near the small abandoned town of Friendship, OR. There we stopped at one of the few remaining buildings from the turn of the century, the old town schoolhouse. From the inside the quiet room shined with the setting sun filling the room with days last moments of light.

We followed crude instructions to an old forest service road that slowly crawl uphill. From the car we could see the lake growing from out of the trees as we drove higher. Eventually we decided to stop, walk into the woods and to our surprise found the giant boulder hidden beneath summers green moss, alone, waiting to be climbed.

We stayed at the summit for the night as the Pole Creek Fires raged 10,000ft below us. A full moon and a few shots of whiskey along with natures campfire put us to bed early but before we fell asleep we watched the sunset over the Cascades as the moon took it's place.

Heartbreak Ridge, Table Mountain WA 2 (For Sale)

<img src="http://a1.s6img.com/cdn/0009/p/2424836_13360567_l.jpg"/>connorcharlesphotography.com

On the ridge, Windy (my dog and best friend) and I looked east up at what was to be our final push for Table Mountain. We had seen snow, hail, rain and sun in the last 3 hours. We had been lost twice and huddle under a tree to keep warm at one point while the clouds rolled in. Yet, for a moment the sun came out and we could see where the trail ended.

We slept in the back of the truck along Golds Beach and woke up before dawn and before the gate had opened and hiked into the canyon. Covered in ferns on both sides with the trickle of a cold creek and the faint sound of the waves crashing somewhere in the distance kept us silent.

We climbed to 10,000ft and before the sunset the sky turned pink, the valleys below filled with the smoke from the fires that were sweeping the foothills on the eastern flanks of the mountain, the winds grew and the temperature dropped.

Oregon's Upper Horsetail Falls is the jumping off point for a number of deviations in the Columbia Gorge, including the gorge hardman's test-piece, The Mystery Trail. The beginning of the lost trail runs up the Rock of the Ages trail, where most stare east through a arched rock wall, deeper into the Gorge. A precarious few step around the side and look across the river into the snowy winter mountains of southern Washington.

Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, Oregon

We walked along the river as the snow turned to rain. The fog had mixed with a refraction of sunlight downriver. We stepped to the edge of the bank and watched as the fog regained it's grip on the day and the slight rain once again turned into snow.

At the foot of Mt Hood few trees stick out from the evergreen. A few sparse branches protrude here and there from the thicket. A warm fall day for 3500ft, with the sun unabated by clouds. The lake seemed only to bring out the gold of the few trees who seemed to know the seasons were changing.

Walking upstream from the Columbia River, Herman Creek seeps from the mountains that line the gorge. Awash in green temperate rainforest it is stumbled upon and rarely searched out for reasons yet unknown.

We reached the bench after a 4 mile hike in the 90 degree heat. The Crooked river streaming below us we found a trail leading from the top of the plateau down to the banks of the river. Once there we saw one of the namesake as we washed the sweat, dried off and made our way back to the top of the ridge.

Standing above the Columbia River Gorge on the edge of a cliff between two mountains lies Heartbreak Ridge. The hail and rain fell but before that the clouds rolled below me as I watched the river disappear.
